Mary Funsten is an event photographer, specializing in weddings, corporate events, family gatherings and portraiture. She has a professional background in editorial and commercial photography, specializing in story telling, and an academic background in art history and film. Mary has openly professed her love for the still image. As a child, she would endlessly pour over old family photos and as a high school student studied photography at the Parsons School of Design. Her passion continued into college where she majored in art history and film at UC Berkeley. Her weekends were spent exploring the photographic world in art galleries and museums.
Mary’s career in photography began in the film industry, working as a camera assistant on major motion pictures, television shows and commercials. She felt privileged to work with, and learn from many of the best cinematographers of our time, picking up the subtleties of telling stories, and the technical tricks to achieve great images. Today she works with loyal clients shooting portraiture, lifestyle and weddings. She also continues to shoot stills in the film industry for a variety of clients.
Mary currently resides in Venice, CA, with her husband, daughter and two cats. Mary has noted that watching her daughter grow up so fast has underlined the importance of preserving life’s beautiful and fleeting moments, a vision that she carries into her personal, editorial and commercial work.
